Child Support Collections Skyrocket in Illinois
In the state of Illinois, experts are saying that tough economic times have led to many parents failing to make child support payments. However, the state says that child support payments collected from unemployed parents skyrocketed in 2010.
Throughout the past few years, the money collected for child support has remained around $1.3 billion and money collected through unemployment pay garnishment in the fiscal year, which ended June 30th, remained comparable to previous years.
According to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family services, the boost in child support payments can be attributed to the improved collection process. An agency spokesperson, Stacy Solano, said, "However, we do believe that in large part the increase is due to economic and employment conditions."
This past year, the state collected $102.9 million from unemployment benefits. In 2009, that figure was $58.9 million.
