Couple Arrested for Adoption Scam
When it is so difficult to adopt a child, the last thing you want to hear is that the couple you were relying on was running a scam.
That is the case for fourteen couples in Minnesota who finally learned why they had yet to be matched with an adoptive child. The scam, run by a man and woman team, had defrauded these couples out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by promising them the wife's unborn twins. They would visit each couple together, pretending to either be boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife, promising each that they would give up their unborn children.
After following the fraudulent pair for several months, the FBI and a U.S. Attorney were able to charge the pair with four counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy and one count of aggravated identity theft. Should the two be convicted of all charges against them, they could spend as much as 20 years behind bars, as well as pay $1 million fine.
