Lesbian Couple Allowed to Divorce in Wyoming
The state Supreme Court of Wyoming ruled that a lesbian couple can now legally file for divorce in their home state.
The couple, Victoria Lee Christiansen and Paula Christiansen, were married in Canada back in 2008. Just two years later the couple filed for divorce, but their petition was denied by Judge Keith Kautz as gay marriages or partnerships are not legal in the state. After hearing their case, the Supreme Court decided to overturn Kautz' decision, essentially placing their same-sex marriage in the same category as common-law marriages. Judge Michael Golden was quick to write in his decision, however, that this ruling did not imply future marriage equality for same-sex couples in Wyoming.
Yet since the decision did come to pass, it did scare such groups as WyWatch, who will now fight for a ballot initiative. According to Becky Vanderberghe, the president of WyWatch, the group will try to prevent marriage equality from being constitutionally granted in the future.
