Father Accused of Interfering with Child Custody
When a father stopped answering calls from the mother of his child, she took action by calling the Menomonie Police Department.
Lavance Hughes III, 30, had custody of his three-month-old child for the night of 3/8/11 and was supposed to return the child at 12 p.m. the following day. The mother of the child, Kathy Lowe, kept calling his hotel room to no avail. After she contact the police department they dispatched officers to the motel where neither Hughes nor the baby was found.
Further investigation into the case revealed that Hughes had purchased a Greyhound bus ticket to South Carolina from Eau Claire. Police were able to catch up with the bus in Columbus, OH and took the child into protective custody. Hughes was arrested based on a warrant in his name for interfering with child custody. The child was later transported back to his waiting mother.
