What is a Closed Adoption?
Are you considering adoption? If so, you need to understand what a closed adoption is and how it can affect your decision to adopt.
In a closed adoption, the birth parents will not know who adopted their child, nor will the adoptive parents know who the birth parents are. This differs from other adoptions in which the adoptive parents are allowed to meet the birth parents and the reverse is true too. Depending on your level of comfort with adoption, you may be asked to participate in a closed adoption.
There are advantages to accepting a closed adoption. It gives a sense of closure to both sets of parents, knowing that the other set will not know about the other. It gives the child a chance at a new life with privacy, allowing the adoptive parents to raise the child as their own. And finally, it allows the birth mother to give up her child without having to explain her choice to do so.
