City Suggests Temporary Marriage Licenses

One city is trying to cut down on the divorce rate by passing legislation for temporary marriage licenses.

According to city officials in Mexico City, the idea behind temporary marriage licenses is simple: allow a couple to be married for a minimum two years, and if the two are unhappy at the end of that term, they will not be forced to get a divorce. Instead, they will be given the option to simply end their temporary marriage. Should the couple be happy and want to continue their marriage, then the license will be renewed. The length of the temporary license will be up to the couple, but must be at least two years long.

While this may seem like a great idea to Americans, who already have a high divorce rate, it is creating quite a stir in Mexico due to the large Catholic population. The legislation is expected to be voted on later this year. Of course, the temporary license is only one option in addition to opting for a full-term marriage.
