Both Parents are Responsible for Children's Financial Well-Being
No matter what state you reside in, both parents are responsible for the financial support of their children. This money, referred to as child support, can be paid by one or both parents, depending on the financial circumstances of both individuals.
In the state of California, for example, child support is usually paid to the parent with whom the child is living. Since this person will have more expenses in relation to the child, the other parent will be asked to provide some form of child support. Any parents who fail to make child support payments will be subjected to their state's laws regarding negligent payments.
While each state has different ways to determine how much child support should be paid each month, the Federal Child Support Enforcement Act demands that states have a system in place to do so. In some states, judges have more control over how much child support is granted; in others, there is a more formulaic approach to calculating monthly payments.
